...Well, the captain and the first mate, at least. :P This is :iconblazingcoral:'s birthday present. HIPPY BARFDAY, BC! :B

(god the categories are full of LAME and they keep getting WORSE! wtf are the admins on?! D: )

I started this last night, with a tablet-sketch of Cap'n Flametail, and a mouse-drawing of Rat Kirby. I started doing the outline in beziers, went to bed, got up, and finished the outline. Then I did the coloring/claw marks/scar/cheek marks, the shading (mostly simple stuff, except for the bits on the claws, and Flametail's bandanna), softened up the shading, which took me a good several hours altogether. By that time I was worried I wouldn't be able to catch BC in time, so I threw up a lazy background (flood fill, paintbrush doodle, texture at 50% opacity, twist it and done) and I didn't like the empty space at the top, so I occupied it with pattern-filled Bizarre font with a fur effect on it to get the outline to mesh nicely with the inside. Then I put on a cheap wind effect, woo. All in all, standard fare for me...

After that I cropped some off the bottom and resized it for display. I've got a wallpaper size too, though it's only 1024x768. You figure out how to crop/resize it to other resolutions. :P

This time I worked in 1000x800; next time I'll do it in 2000x1000.

As I said before, this is PWNAGE. The way you drew Flametail is AWESOME. Her tailflame is sweet looking too. :D

Flametail's tailflame (ha ha ha) looks so awesome. Like a flower, just about to bloom.

(also is it normal for me to think that lazy backgrounds look really cool)

I thought about putting him in but I felt pressed for time. SO SQUIRREL GETS SHUNNED, HA! (no really someday I might make a pic with him in it too, I need to draw Tanner more)

And yeah, it's normal to think lazy BGs are cool. It's cool because everyone cheats to make them.

I forgot to put the making of the tailflame in the description, so you get it here. After all the sketching/outlining/coloring/shading was done, I took a size 5 paintbrush at 100% hardness and drew some lines in different reds and oranges and yellows where the flame would be. Then I took the smudge tool (size 5) and used that to fill it all in and flesh every bit of the flames out. Smudge tool goes a looooooong way (even more so than what I did here; it's great for grass, flowers, sprouts, tons of stuff just from a flat green ground coloring).
